May 2011 - Mandi's Selection #21

Book Club Meeting - May 14th, 2011

Saturday was our book club gathering for Heather's book Revenge of the Paste Eaters. We had a lovely time.  She made us a delicious lunch of grilled chicken, taco dip and fruit with caramel dipping sauce.  We were all there except Aunt Dot, who was home resting after spending the week caring for my sick uncle.  It was a very nice leisurely discussion fo the book. We all had varying opinions of the book.  Mom didn't like what the author referred to her girlfriend as.  I thought the book had funny parts but some rather slow parts as well.  Heather thought there were sections where she kept thinking "oh will you get on with it already"  :)  But overall it was good book and a nice discussion.
Of course I discussions always lead to other topics so we had our usual fun.  Well the next book selection was mine so I informed everyone that we would be reading two different works.  I wanted to read The Wilder Life by Wendy McClure for book club but being a new book we have a hard time getting everyone a copy and we hate to have to spend the money each time, so even though I was 174 pages into it I decided against it.  But I did stick with the Laura Ingalls Wilder thread and chose a chapter out of the book Borrowed Names by Jeanette Atkins, the chapter about Laura Ingalls and her daughter Rose.  Then the book to go along with this is no other than Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  :)  I hope everyone enjoys it.  I have so many ideas for my book club meeting that I can't wait!

April 2011 - Heather's Selection #20

This is the new book club selection for our April meeting.  It was Heather's choice to read Revenge of the Paste Eaters: Memoirs of a Misfit by Cheryl Peck. The author also wrote Fat Girls and Lawn Chairs: sounds like my kind of book.  I haven't started the book yet but I just went on to Barnes and Noble.com to order it for my Nook.  I know, I know, I splurged, but.... I haven't bought a book in so long I think that it is fair.  Don't you?  lol. Well I will keep you posted as to how the book is, but for now you will just have to wait in suspense....

Drums of Autumn Reference...

My aunt sent me this url.  Since we are reading about a Scotsman she thought it would be appropriate:  http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=MZ35SOU9HTM

March 2011 - Dot's selection #19

This month our book was Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon.  This is the fourth book in the Outlander series.  It is my aunt Dot that started us reading this series and everytime it is her choice she chooses to continue this series - and we love her for it!  If you have never read the Outlander series you need to run to your public library and snatch it up, you will not be sorry.  Here is what Barnes and Noble posts about this series: "Are they histories? Fantasies? Science fiction? While it may be impossible to categorize the books Diana Gabaldon calls historical fantasias, it hardly matters to the author s huge and loyal fan base, all of whom are just eager to devour Gabaldon s richly detailed, complexly plotted, extravagantly romantic romps through time, space, and breathtaking landscapes."  Trust me when I say that you must read these books!  I have even gotten my husband to read them and he is currently on number three, which means I better hurry up before he catches up to me.  ;)
